Ship Fired Thirty Bullets at My Helicopter

Ship Fired Thirty Bullets at My Helicopter

This is really a gripping and tense true life story from the book called A True Life Story Book published by www.atruelifestory.com This story is a classic example of how a very normal day in the life of a helicopter pilot, could turn to a nightmare in a couple of hours. Rarely would you have heard about aircraft being hit by own country's defense forces due to mistaking for an enemy aircraft. Many pilots are known to have lost their life in such true life incidents.

This true life story begins with the author taking off his helicopter from the deck of a small naval ship on which he was posted in the early nineties. The flight briefing somehow got delayed. The flight of the helicopter was to to go and clear the area where the ship was going to fire for upto 40 nautical miles. If there are any fishing boats or merchant vessels, they should be told to move away.

The helicopter was to take off at 07:00 am and land back at 09:00am. The ship was supposed to start firing its 4.5 inch guns after the helicopter lands, starting from 09:00 am. The bullets are 4.5 inch or 13 cm in diameter and were half a meter long. Each bullet weighed over 25 kilogram. The guns fire these bullets to hit a target at a range of about twenty nautical miles or about 40 kilometers. These guns are usually fired at enemy aircraft attacking the ship at sea and also at ships and missiles at beyond visual ranges.

Unfortunately, the author has to fly his helicopter very low at hover to tell the fishermen to clear off the area by showing them a plaque written in local language. This takes time and at low altitudes the radio contact with the ship gets cut off. Neither the ship knows where the helicopter is and nor does the helicopter know where is his ship to go back and land. They fly over the sea based on trust and previous experience.

After two hours when the author was flying back to his ship for landing, he realizes that his helicoptre has developed some problem in its engine. What happens next is completely unimaginable and unheard of even during the world war I and II.

I do not want to take away the suspense of this true life story from the reader of this blog.
